BOOM caught a quick Q&A with Heavy Hong Kong’s Lai Fai aka Blood Dunza before they kick of their China tour with Tippa Irie, Grammy award nominated reggae/dub artist, at XXX on Thursday. The tour will stop off at some of the best underground spots in China, like Shelter in Shanghai and Guangzhou’s C: Union.
What does the atmosphere tend to be like at these events?
What interested you in the reggae/dancehall/jungle theme?
We have been one of the main DnB /Jungle Promotors in HK for the last 8 years, Reggae Sounding has always been one of the sounds we promote. Now we’re moving towards promoting more the original style 70s Reggae style and the 80s dancehall. Those are the golden periods for sounds we love!
What made you decide to book Tippa Irie?
Tippa Irie is world-class entertainer; he makes people feel good and happy in his performance, also one of the best M.C.s in the game. Have loved a lot of his work since the 80s. We met Tippa Irie in the UK, and then when he was doing his South-East Asia tour we missed our chance. Since then we have been in touch, and he is coming for our China Tour in 2 days!
Were you very selective with the venues you chose across China for the tour?
Yes, these venues for the tour are all respected in their areas.
Is this the first time you’ve travelled for an anniversary of Heavy Hong Kong?
We have done many China/Asia/Europe tours with our own DJs, but this is the 1st time we are bringing a major artist across the country. Well excited for it .
How was Heavy Hong Kong initially set up?
We set up HEAVY at a small bar on a Thursday 8 years ago in Central , to have a platform to share our music and aimed to set the taste a bit heavier than what was around .
