Yesterday 18th of June, XXXTentacion, a 20 years old American rapper with growing fame, was gunned down in South Florida. He was attacked as he was driving out of a motorcycle dealer in which he had been shopping, by two men on a motorcycle, the police suspects. Witnesses say that the murderers stole a bag after committing the crime, in what appears at the moment to be a robbery. No one has been arrested so far.
XXXTentacion was a rising rap star since the release of his single “Look At Me”, which instantly got viral on social media. The song’s music video, released in September 2017, stirred quite some controversy for staging a scene showing XXX lynching a young white boy, cinematographically, trying to demonstrate the harm of racial violence. The video is hardly accessible on the internet today.
He also had an altercation with Drake in early 2017 which shed quite some light on him.
But mostly, XXXTentacion was an artist with an amazing growth-rate, and high productivity. In his 2 years of serious career he released 2 studio albums, both innovative and ambitious. He gained respect from his peers, even featuring Joey Bada$$ in his latest album titled ?. Californian rapper Hopsin has said about him in an interview:
“At first, I was kinda sceptical ‘cause I thought he was one of those guys…I thought he was going to be bullshit rap, but he’s not. When he speaks you can tell that he is an intelligent individual. He’s not a dumbass dude; I fuck with him.”
XXXTentacion was also well-known for his raw and direct style, his versatility (his albums would be patchworks made of trap, boom-bap, and experimental rock), and his dark themes, often addressing depression, mental illnesses and sadness.
