Last Saturday we’re filled with delight, sadness, anguish and a lot more sophisticated emotions, brought to us Hong Kong fans by John Legend. The “Darkness and Light Tour” is more than stellar, with the long-waiting concert arrival and the romantic songs blossomed in AsiaWorld Expo, bringing us audience a full live up-and-down sensation. That’s what John Legend is capable of.
The award-winning singer-songwriter started off the concert by ‘I Know Better’, the famous and popular top hit that most of the fans know by heart. Accompanied with a full live band, John Legend took the audience heart by no surprise! Among the 25 songs performed, plenty of them are romantic songs that shattered our hearts only by listening. The tour in Hong Kong definitely left fans wonderstruck.
We have a chance to chat with John Legend about the process of creating the album, the dark times he once came across, his future music exploration and many more.
Your music always reflects on different stages of your life, what stage in your life were you at when creating ‘Darkness and Light’?
Each album is different and reflects where I am in my life at the time. I was a new husband and father when I wrote this album in late 2015/early 2016. I was inspired by those changes in my life. I also worked with a new producer, Blake Mills, and some musicians I’d never worked with before.
Would you say that this album explores a darker topic compared to the ones you’ve produced before? What made you decide to highlight this topic?
I’ve always written from an honest perspective about life and relationships. Life isn’t always easy. We all deal with fear, uncertainty and conflict. I write about those things, but I maintain an optimistic outlook.
Were you excited to come to Hong Kong, what did you explore whilst you were here?
We got to explore the city a bit. We enjoyed the cuisine and the beautiful sights. We also took Luna to Disneyland for the first time. That was fun!
How did the concept of the album come about, were there any difficulties in the process?
Every album starts with me just getting in the studio and writing. The writing process is really a discovery process. I learn new things about myself and about what I want to say. It’s an exciting process. Every day brings the opportunity to create something special that could change my life.
You’ve had Chance the Rapper joining in for a verse on ‘Penthouse Floor’, will you be further exploring the Hip Hop scene in the future?
Of course. I’ve always worked with talented hip hop artists from Kanye to Common to Jay Z to Rick Ross to Chance. There will be more in the future.
Your music career can be coined as successful with 10 X Grammy awards and a Golden Globe, were there any obstacles/ dark times when you thought of giving up?
I never thought of truly giving up. But there were obstacles and challenges throughout my career. I’ve been playing and singing since I was a young child. I tried in earnest to get a record deal starting in 1998 but didn’t get one until 2004. In those six years, I was rejected many times. But I persisted and believed that I had something special to offer the world.
What are some of the exciting plans you have for the year 2018 that you can share with our readers?
Immediately upon returning to the States, I’ll go to New York to continue rehearsing for the title role in Jesus Christ Superstar. That will be broadcast live on NBC on April 1. After that I’ll continue writing and recording my next album. And we’re having a baby boy too!
