Event: Club CUBIC presents MAKJ
Date: Saturday 17th May 2014
Venue: Club CUBIC, Macau
Professionally racing go-karts by the age of 15, MAKJ, who is still only 23 years old, has already become one of the most in-demand DJs in the world. Introduced into the racing world by his stepfather, he first started out in China and then ended up joining a racing team in Macau while still in his teens. While there, he saw DJ Q*Bert perform at a club in China and that’s what got him hooked with his first set of Technics 1200 Turntables. By the age of 17, he was back in his native United States where he found himself being mentored by the late great Adam Goldstein, better known as DJ AM. Before long, he found himself playing Avalon, Pacha, The Hollywood Palladium and last year (and this year) he played the Ultra Music Festival at Miami as well as on the main stage at the inaugural TomorrowWorld in Georgia.
“I wasn’t actually musical at all [growing up],” he admits. “But over the years as I developed my DJ skills, I got more into the musical side of things. After some time making edits and mashups for my sets, I decided to give original production a try and that’s when I really started developing the musical side of my skills.” For MAKJ, though, while he enjoys production, it’s the DJing that really is the turn on. “DJing is definitely where I have the most fun.” Of course, coming back to Club Cubic holds a lot of memories for MAKJ. “It’s going to be great to come back and play shows there. I’ve never toured there properly, so this will be very special, coming back to play shows in the country where I had my first experience watching a DJ perform. It’s all coming full circle.” We’re sure Macau and China are as excited to see their ‘adopted’ son come back in glory.
