Pousada de São Tiago
Avenida da República, Fortaleza de São Tiago da Barra
Once a fortress built by the Portuguese in the early 17th century, it was transformed a few years ago into Macau’s chicest boutique hotel, a pleasant alternative to the huge chains around. There are just 12 luxury suites with all mod-cons and outdoor terrace allows you to dine under actual stars – not the strange, artificial ones in the casinos – so it’s perfect if gambling’s not your thing, or if you just need a break from the craps tables.
Level 2, The Shops at The Boulevard, City of Dreams, Estrada do Istmo, Cotai
The largest and, arguably, the best club in Macau, Club Cubic is high on the list for music fans throughout the region for their incredible international DJ line-ups and other must-see acts – the crowd that turned up for PSY packed the vast space all the way to the entrance. A secondary room provides some smoother sounds when the main area gets too sweaty, and five VIP rooms upstairs makes sure no-one steals your champagne.
MGM Macau, Avenida Dr. Sun Yat Sen, Nape
Situated inside MGM MACAU, this small but vibrant bar is famous for its live music. Cover bands and other acts give this place a different feel from the bass-heavy sounds of other clubs. They also offer cabaret and Macau’s best-known comedy club, where TakeOut Comedy takes over the stage two times a month on Sunday evenings. So even if you’ve lost it all, you can at least have a good laugh about it.

Stunning views from the 16th floor of the StarWorld Hotel will appeal to those looking for a calmer drinking experience. A fine selection of single malt whiskies (it is called the Whisky Bar, after all), cocktails and premium wine are the order of the evening. But if that’s not enough, you can top this off with live musical performances, dance shows as well as a separate cigar lounge for the bosses among us.

Level 38, Altira Macau, Avenida de Kwong Tung, Taipa
